This past weekend was so much fun. Perfect summer weather, friends and family make the perfect recipe for fun.

Late nights around the campfire got me thinking about a favorite tradition almost every family has done: Makeing S'mores around a campfire. We loved them when we where children, and we love them now. This post is to celebrate our traditions and add some new twists that may be fun to try out. See Below

Gouda, pepper jack, brick, cheddar, goat cheese, cheese with bacon, and so on. My stomach ached, but my taste buds soared.

This past weekend we had a little road trip through Wisconsin. Americas Dairy Land is right. During one of our stops we saw a local fruit farm offering strawberry picking. It was so much fun and we even got to feed the goats. I would saw we are off to a great summer:)

I have been told time and time again that it is apparent that Mint is my favorite color and I don't need to flaunt it in every inch of my life, but sorry to say, its not going anywhere. It's just one of those things that makes me smile inside. It's a happy color:)

Do you remember the magical tent that was erected in "The Holiday" movie? I do!

Yes, the movie is cute and everything, but the most memorable scene is when Jude Law's kids showcase their tent. WOW! This got me thinking? Why couldn't we make this ourselves?

The Holiday

This inspired me to create our own version with my precious niece Colie:) She has a dreamers imagination and was all smiles at the thought of creating a tent in her bedroom. We cut out our stars and rounded up all the bed linens we could find to create our little bit of magic. Let me know what you think of it (Below).

"Come on in" is what the ladies yelled at us through their glass window.

Curious at what type of treasures where located in the store, out faces where pressed up against the glass window like children looking into a candy shop. Unfortunately, the store's sign claimed it was closed. Lucky for us, the three ladies (Miss Kathy, Debbie, and Dora) where re-arranging their new items on their day off, and spotted us. They swung the door open, and greeted us with a big smile and a very southern hello. We stepped inside the land of eccentricities and felt as if we where in heaven. Scanning each nook, cranny, shelf, and cubbard, I found all of my goodies, and left excited over our new finds!

Corbin Kentucky is a bit of a road trip (about 8 Hours) for those in the Chicago land area, but a great location to begin your southern vintage/antique finds. We wish Alley Stuff all the luck in the world and look forward to stopping by the next time we drive through Kentucky.

Picture This.........

You wake up and have a warm cup of coffee and some fresh baked bread while taking in the breathtaking views.

Later, you decide it would be lovely to do some garden work and soak up some of the suns warm rays.

You get hungry and decide to invite friends over for good eats and drinks. A few canopy lights later, and the mood is set. All that is missing is the Gypsy band of violins playing folk music around the campfire! For now the Ipod will do.

You are tired from the amazing day and wish to rest your eyes on a soft pillow surrounded by billowing sheets of fabric, so that just the mountain air ever so slightly blows through.

These places have such a dreamy quality to them and are beautiful inspirations. Patrick Johansson photographed these locations for his book, "The Architects Holiday House". Relaxed, slow, cozy.....everything I will be looking for in my next home:)

December 19th 1982 I arrived to the US for the first time. I was very sad to leave my cousins and friends behind but excited to see snow for the first time. It had snowed three days prior and the piles of gray snow I saw on the side of the roads were very disappointing .There was however one thing that put a smile on my face , an old station wagon, you know the ones with the wood like panels on the outer doors, YES that one! It was decorated for Christmas, it had a wreath attached to the front! "Christmas jewelery for the car I thought" What spirit they must have here!I told myself that as soon as I had a car I would decorate it for Christmas .Four years later I got my first car and apparently, I was too cool for a wreath. Then life happened and now, 27 years later I put a wreath on my car and made my friend do it also. I LOVE IT! People look at it and smile, it's simple but in the madness of it all, when I'm rushing to go here or there, I notice people smiling at my wreath and it makes me happy and reminds me of what the holidays are for! My friend and I are starting a new tradition, we will be hanging wreaths from our cars the day after Thanksgiving and kicking off the Holiday season. Will you join us? We want people to make us smile too!

This indie rock band, The Mumlers, is a hidden gem in today's tech savey world. Seven individuals have created a vintage inspired feel to their band in the oddest of neighborhoods; Silicone Valley, and with the use of old high school instruments, they have created a woozy, folkey tale sound. These individuals are not the smooth fashion easta types, but when you produce music like the Mumlers do, well, who cares! Check out song: Tangled Up With You. A must have addition to your playlist.

One day flipping through my monster collection of gossip/ style magazines I came across this amazing article on Laura O'Neil and her husband Ben Van Leeuwen aka Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream. Two creative people that had a dream and actually tackled it full force.

In 2008 Laura and Ben felt uncertain in their careers (Laura was an intern and Ben had just finished business school), and decided to do something unexpected; open up a organic artisan ice cream business. Getting help from friends and family, they where able to scrape together enough funds to purchase their first ice cream truck off eBay and the rest is history. Ok, so they have had quite a journey, but let's just say that New York has welcomed their product with open arms, so much in fact, that they opened up their first store front this spring of 2010 and have added 4 trucks into their routes.

The very stylish and unique couples story has been a big inspiration to me, and their shop will be at the top of my "go to" list when I visit the Big Apple. Cant wait for some hazelnut chocolate ice cream:)

Have you ever been inspired by a place? Early this summer I took a trip with a friend to her family's cottage in Muskrat Lake in Gobles Michigan. I had been anticipating the trip, not only because I needed some R&R, but because hearing her describe this place made all my senses delightfully anxious . We arrived late in the evening not a peep to be heard in the deeply wooded area. We walked into the house and it felt like home from the very first second my foot entered the door. I tried to process all of the charm and character around me in fast scans of the rooms but it truly deserved time spent discovering every nook and cranny. We settled in and prepared a delicious Cuban meal, stuffed our faces and slipped into a temporary coma. I woke up early and anxious to look around and see this amazing place I've always hear so much about. The light was peeking in the windows ever so slightly it was a damp and rainy day. I went downstairs and made a cup of coffee, with my first sip and with rested eyes I began my exploration. This beautifully crafted Quaker cottage from the late 1800's is full of locally picked, junked and haggled pieces that have so much character you can almost hear their stories. A large deck and a gazebo was added to the back of the home, it over looks a densely wooded down hill lot that ends at the lake, a lovely spot to enjoy my coffee and some magazines while I wait for my friend to wake up. Once my friend awoke she gave me the official tour of the grounds. We slipped into our Wellies and checked out the "shacks", that is what she lovingly calls a series of small buildings to the right of the main home and around the vegetable garden beds. These little homes where built for fisherman to stay during the fishing season.

After walking down to the lake and enjoying the view for a while we got ready and drove down to the Elegan County Fair to search for treasures for our shops. Five hours later we returned with our car looking like a small circus clown car. It was a perfect weekend and I can't wait for our next trip in two weeks!

This is Anais Nin, A.K.A., Fanshaw; a breath of fresh air in the music world. I stumbled upon her album Dark Eyes by accident, but once I heard her sweat song bird voice threaded with unusual melodic tones in the background, I knew I was hooked. A store I happened to stumble upon during my visit to Savannah Georgia. So much character with all the collections of odds and ends. Alone you would not give these items a second glance, but paired in multiples, they have a reminiscent quality of a Parisian flea market.

Years ago, I had stumbled upon this tiny boutique in Michigan that had loads of charm and a handful of very unique jewelry. I scooped up this necklace that had been made from antique/vintage finds and piecemealed back together. Unfortunately the little boutique had closed shortly after, and I was never able to get the jewelry designers name but I have found something very similar that holds the same feeling.

A Chinese farmer has been tinkering with modified pears since 2003, and this year he's reportedly grown 10,000 edible Buddhas. The technique, which took Gao Xianzhang six years to perfect, involves confining each piece of fruit in a plastic mold
for a certain amount of time as it grows. There are no reports on the flavor just yet, but that’s presumably not much of a priority.
Does anyone else think this is bizarre?

POPPIES and MUSCARI

I've been always told am a bit different, but it has never stopped me from doing the things I like. Although I did enjoy a typical childhood of pretending to be wonder woman , lassoing my younger sister and dragging her across our backyard, I would much rather spend time gardening with my dad and grandpa and learning how to cook with my mom or grandma. I looked up to them and they were my real super heroes.
Today at 38 my life is full of things to be grateful for and I've acquired a new hero. I want to be just like her when I grow old! England's Valerie Finnis one of the great ladies of gardening, renowned as a plantswoman and flower photographer. Her mother was Constance Finnis, who raised the strain of Iceland poppies that bears her name. She noticed her small daughter's fascination with plants, and gave her a prominent plot in front of the house when she was only four.At 18, Valerie entered Waterperry Horticultural School for Women near Oxford. She surrounded herself with her beloved plants, pictures and loved ones. She gardened with her husband ten hours a day until he died. A variety of blue Muscari was named after her after it appeared inexplicably in her English garden. She wore crazy hats and loved to gossip about the plant world. I give anything to spend a day investigating her brain over a pot of Earl Gray.

Saipua has been making olive oil based soap since 1999.They are a small family owned business located in the Hudson Valley NY.

Their soaps are carefully crafted in small batches using food-grade vegetable oils, butters, herbs and extracts. Each bar is hand cut, air dried and cured in their workshop.

Dedicated to small business, they continue to produce soaps in small batches to assure quality and sustainability. They are an amazing addition to our shop and we can't wait for you to try them!

For all those mourning the loss of so many shelter publications including Domino, House & Garden, and Blueprint, there’s Lonny, an online magazine founded by Domino alumni Michelle Adams and photographer Patrick Cline. It’s a novel idea, a true home design magazine with pages that turn at the click of a mouse. The fashion shoots and even the featured homes are chock-full of clickable images that link to online shops where you can buy the items. Lonny launched in October of 2009 and you can look forward to the next issue in early April.

MUSIC TO MY EARS

I have always been drawn to music, but over these past few years, I have made it an important hobby of mine. Finding a great album is like striking gold, so when I found The Fleet Foxes, I felt as if I was the wealthiest person alive. They where first discovered from one of those free Starbucks cards you pick up at the counter. The free itunes download led to me purchasing the entire album and obsessing over their folky melodic voices. You will find only one
complete album, but it is worth every penny.

I have a confession: My brother in law loves to record concert performances, and this year, I was able to view the Fleet Foxes performance at Glastonbury. If I wasn't already in love with their voices, I became obsessed with them as a whole band. Calm and collective on stage, the band looked as if they came straight out of the forest with their straggly beards and plaid button up shirts, but wait- they where also wearing Wellies!!! I had wanted the Hunter rain boots otherwise known as wellies for some time, but now that the fleet foxes had them (they looked so cool!) I had to HAVE them too. A few months later, I received the nicest pair of Merlot colored wellies under the Christmas tree.

As embarrassing as that story is, I truly feel that this album is an enjoyable listen on a relaxing afternoon, so let their voices be heard!

SPRING INSPIRATION

Do you throw out the little left over buds because they are too small to fit in your vase? Over a year ago, I was fortunate enough to travel through Amsterdam. I fell in love with their delft blue tulip vases. These pieces of art display the countries symbol (the tulip) in a unique way and inspired me to find my own modern, American version.

The clear saguaro vase is simple and elegant. I love how the green stems become the focus. There are a few sizes available for this vase, but depending on the type of flower, you may need them all!

The vase below was found while treasure hunting. It is handmade and one of a kind. I love the organic arm-like shapes erupting out of the body of the vase.

For me, they represent a memory. For you, they can transform your garden greens into little pieces of art!

I made a short trip to visit my parents in Florida this holiday season. What a refreshing change of scenery! Loved hanging out with my dad, combing through his garden with a fine tooth comb. He is always moving things around and experimenting with different varieties of plants . On this trip I discovered he had started a few Bonsais, could not help but to chuckle inside as I imagined my Italian dad taking lessons on Bonsai making and communicating with Mr Miagui! Not much in bloom in December, but all so brilliantly green.
Here are a few of my favorites.

Here are a few bright and sunny blooms to chase the clouds away. I love looking back into our wedding archives and finding pictures of bride's past. This particular wedding took place at Cafe Braur in Lincoln Park. It was a glorious summer day and the bride was as radiant as her crystal chandelier centerpieces.
This post was inspired by the birth of their sweet baby boy Emmett just one week ago.

Living in this harsh climate, I need to indulge in something that uplifts my January blues, and I have found happiness in Candles!

What type of candle person are you? I believe there are three distinct groups. Some of us are scent sensitive, some are little piros and will burn what ever is available, and then there is always the group that is happy with the marked down dented candles (don't be ashamed, I have been in that isle also). As someone who has sniffed there way to the perfect candle brands, I am proud to share with you heavens scent in wax form.

The first being Capri Blue. Favorite Scent: Volcano: a mix of tropical fruits with a hint of exotic mountain greens.

This is a candle I have not only been in love with at first sniff but will fill your room with a sweet aroma . The cobalt containers crafted from recycled glass adds something special to every room.

Burn Time: 100 Hours

If you are someone who needs more than a pretty scent in a candle, then Voluspa is the brand for you. Favorite Scent: Champaca Bloom & Fern: Sweet blooms, fresh ferns, and a hint of gardenia.

After three months of hard work and many volunteering hands our Kris Kringle Market was a success. Many came to join in the festivities.The North Pole was buzzing with excitement and Santa and Mrs Claus were very pleased with the children's behavior this year.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all of the volunteering hours, the hundreds of dollars donated for the Lemont Food Pantry and all of the gifts donated for our giving tree. We truly enjoyed putting it together and are hoping to improve it for 2010. Who knows, maybe next year we dream bigger and look a little more like this.
